How to Choose the Right Medical Journal for Your Original Article

How to Choose the Right Medical Journal for Your Original Article

The Publication Dilemma

You’ve finished writing your original article, but where should you submit it? Choosing the wrong journal can lead to quick rejections or getting trapped in predatory journals.

1. Check the Scope and Aims

Read the journal’s "About Us" section. If you wrote a paper on pediatric surgery, submitting it to a general medicine journal might result in a desk rejection.

2. Verify Indexing

Ensure the journal is indexed in reputable databases like PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, or is recognized by PMDC/HEC.

3. Impact Factor vs. Acceptance Rate

High impact factor journals (like The Lancet or NEJM) have extremely low acceptance rates (often <5%). If you need a publication quickly for promotion, consider local HEC recognized journals with a faster peer-review process.

4. Beware of Predatory Journals

If a journal promises publication in 48 hours for a fee, it is likely predatory. Publications in these journals are not recognized by academic councils and harm your reputation.
